Excursion to the largest telescope in Eurasia — To get to this place in the mountains of Karachay-Cherkessia, I would like a very long time. And then, finally, my little dream - to see in action Large Telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of Russia - has come true! We invite you on an interesting tour of the largest telescope in Eurasia!
Excursion to the largest telescope in Eurasia |
In the valley of the Big Zelenchuk near Nizhny Arkhyz, in the 60s of the last century was built Research Institute, Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The main venue for the observation place was at the height of 2100 meters near mountain Pastukhova.

Here is the Big Telescope Alt-azimuthal (BTA), with a monolithic mirror diameter of 6 meters.

To the left of the telescope - a special crane, which was used in the construction of the tower and the telescope.

The height of the dome of the telescope - 50 meters, it is made of aluminum.

The diameter of the dome - about 45 meters. The shutter is moved upward in the center, providing the observation. The dome itself thus can rotate around its axis.

This form is revealed from the top of the dome.

In this hall tour tell the history of the Observatory, what it does. The decision to build a six-meter telescope with a mirror was adopted in 1960. Several years of continued design and construction, including more than three years to make mirrors, and in 1975, the observatory was commissioned.

The dimensions of the telescope is staggering. What you see in the photo, it is the lower circular platform on which enshrined the mirror. This machine weighs 650 tons can smoothly move around its axis.

The light from the mirror is collected, concentrated and reflected in the upper part of the telescope, wherein the primary receiver is located. The focal length of the telescope in the end - 24 meters! But if you use the additional mirror that throws light back, and then one side of the focus, the focal length is increased to 180 meters!

Leaf dome closed.

We were lucky when we opened the dome and telescope show the work in action! At the bottom of the mechanisms that open sash.

Dome of the way, inside the hollow, you can climb the stairs to the top of the telescope.

On the dome you can climb the stairs on special. Some of our group even made it)

Earlier in the upper part, resembling glass, sat a man who receives a signal. Now it makes electronics. A signal is transmitted in the working space.

If you think that the "glass" for the man is small, then yes, you're right.

After the demonstration of the telescope, we went down to the lower floor to see what devices to keep things running.

The telescope is fixed to the slewing platform with a vertical axis of the penalty. The upper part of the platform we have seen above - it is a circle with a diameter of 12 meters and below, it goes into a spherical ring, which acts as a bearing.
Photos and Text Timur Agirov
Spherical ring rests on supports fluid friction, three hard and three spring-loaded.

We go down to the floor below. Here is the drive rotation. This two-wheel drive for tracking objects in two dimensions.

Because Bearing telescope rests on oil, for its movement lacks a small engine, a 1 kW. In the photo, it is true, is not it, and the installation in the next room.

We go down even lower. This lower bearing block which is fixed axis.

The foundation of the telescope is separated from the general foundation of the tower to avoid unnecessary vibrations.

Then we got into the room telescope control. This opens - closes all doors and devices.

BTA telescope remained the largest telescope in the world since 1975, yet 18 years later it is not surpassed the Keck telescope in the United States. Now it remains the largest telescope on our continent, and to conduct research on it is written to the queue. Tourists can also get here in the daytime excursions available from the resort romance. I spoke about the telescope is very superficial, invites everyone to a full tour, personally came to this place, it's decent. Photos and Text Timur Agirov
