Patricia Van Lubeck — Surreal Artist

Born in Amsterdam, Patricia's life has quite recently changed dramatically. She used to be book-keeper until 2000 when she started the 21st century by becoming a fulltime professional artist. She moved to the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand in 2005. Since then her work has taken a new direction.

Although her style is often regarded as surreal, her work does not strictly fall in that category. Her paintings are apparently simple in composition but executed amazingly detailed and visually very dynamic. Her paintings have realistic elements, but above all an alienating atmosphere. Her works in recent years show landscapes and weird plant species which she calls her 'psychedelic gardens'. In 2010 she received a grant from the prestigious Pollock-Krasner foundation in New York. She was finalist in the NZ 2010 Adam portraiture awards, the 2007 NZ Painting and Printmaking Award and the 2006 James Wallace Art Awards. She was runner-up in the 2006 Tivoli Audio PAL Case design contest.

Killing Animals – Unethical and Immoral

Man has forever hounded animals as the beginning of meter. 1st, it cost a affair of endurance. Early man hunted animals for food and then later, for the animal’s fur to keep warm and stay alive in the winter. While the actions of early man were justified, the actions of modern man are just unacceptable and completely uncivilized.

Modern man hunts and kills animals for sport, recreation and for cosmetic reasons. Man has hunted various species of animals to extinction. If any animal has the misfortune of having thick, lush fur, chances are that man has hunted and killed it to make coats with its fur. If this senseless killing continues then one day man will have destroyed all animal life on earth, and in the process brought about his own destruction. The time now is critical. Action has to be taken today and now!

Gorillas, bears, seals, wolves, whales and dolphins are regularly hunted and killed for either fur or meat.

What makes this unethical and immoral is the way these creatures are hunted and killed. What also makes this so senseless is that all of these creatures are killed, not because there is any necessity or solid reasoning, but because their meat is fancied by a few people and their fur makes for great coats and hats.

Hallstatt Austria (11 Pictures)

Tucked away in the mountains of Austria you’ll find the tiny town of Hallstatt. Hallstatt and its population of less than 1000 residents rest on the southwestern shore of the Hallstätter See. In addition to the picturesque view of the town on the lake, tourists can see the world’s first salt mine, enjoy nearby skiing, take a trip to the World Heritage Museum, and visit the Dachstein ice cave. Though this village is very small, there are a few different hotels and restaurants to choose from.

Hallstatt, Upper Austria is a village in the Salzkammergut, a region in Austria. It is located near the Hallstätter See (a lake). At the 2001 census it had 946 inhabitants. Peter Scheutz has been mayor of Hallstatt since 1993.

Giant Coconut Crab (15 Pictures)

Giant Coconut Crab
The coconut crab, Birgus latro, is the largest land-living arthropod in the world, and is probably at the upper limit of how big terrestrial animals with exoskeletons can become in today’s atmosphere. The species inhabits the coastal forest regions of many Indo-Pacific islands, although localized extinction has occurred where the crab is sympatric with man. Generally nocturnal, they remain hidden during the day and emerge only on some nights to forage. Their body is divided into four regions; the cephalic lobe, forepart, trunk, and opisthosoma. It is a highly apomorphic hermit crab and is known for its ability to crack coconuts with its strong pincers to eat the contents. It is the only species of the genus Birgus. More pix after a jump...

Dollar Cafe Worlds most expensive wallpapers

What could be the world’s most expensive wallpaper made of? Of money, obviously! I just came across an interesting post about the Money Pubs in the US where money is being put on the walls, dollar bill by dollar bill. The two money pubs mentioned are the No Name Pub that started in 1931 in Big Pine Key, FL as a general store and the McGuire’s Irish Pub that opened in 1977. In the 70’s and 80’s, the No Name Pub became widely famous because of Jimmy Buffet popularity. People started coming and so their money and that money started being put on the walls, dollar bill by dollar bill. The thirty year results can be seen in the pictures. Startlingly, there is over $750,000 in singles hanging on the walls and from the ceiling.
On the other hand, McGuire’s Irish Pub has an interesting story with money wallpapers. Molly, the Pub’s first waitress, took her first dollar tip and stapled it on the wall. Since that day, there has been over $550,000 in dollar bills stuck on the walls and ceiling. The best thing is that these dollar bills have been artistically stuck on the walls and ceiling.  More pix after a jump...

Top 10 Most Disturbing Delicacies On Earth

10. Kopi Luwak

There is no beating around the bush on this one – Kopi Luwak are coffee beans that come from Civet (a cat sized mamal) poo. The animals gorge on only the finest the ripe berries, and excrete the partially-digested beans, which are then harvested for sale. Kopi Luwak is the most expensive coffee in the world, selling for between $120 and $600 USD per pound, and is sold mainly in Japan and United States, but it is increasingly becoming available elsewhere. The beans are washed, and given only a light roast so as to not destroy the complex flavors that develop through the process.

These massive beasts have some noticeable physical differences from their African relatives. Their segmented hide looks like a formidable coat of natural body armor. It functions a bit like one also: Flexible skin between the thicker hide “plates” allows them to shift as the rhinoceros moves.

Top 10 Enchanting Tree Tunnels

Unless you're dendrophobic - in which case it would possibly be the worst sight on Earth seeing as Ents luckily don't exist - there's something eerily romantic and comforting about streets and paths lined with trees, especially when their branches grow to the point where they arch over the road itself and meet in the middle to form a natural tunnel. Of course there a thousands of these green passageways around the planet so this is obviously a small selection, but I thought I'd share a few examples of one of nature's many visual treats.
